Hydraulic cylinder repair
Like any mechanism, a hydraulic cylinder fails over time. The most common causes of failure are wear of the hydraulic seals and damage to the rod and barrel (housing) of the cylinder.
Seal wear
A standard seal kit in a hydraulic cylinder includes:
- Wipers
- Piston seals
- Rod seals
- Guide rings
- Sealing rings
Mechanical wear of any of these elements can have different consequences. For example, if the wiper is damaged, various contaminants such as water and dust can get into the cylinder cavity, which will damage the internal components. In turn, a damaged piston seal causes the working fluid (hydraulic oil) to pass from the rod chamber into the piston chamber or vice versa. As a result, the equipment on which the hydraulic cylinders are installed does not work properly.

Causes of rod and barrel failure in a hydraulic cylinder
The most common causes of hydraulic cylinder failure are:
– rod bending
– mechanical damage to the rod and barrel (scratches, dents, impact marks, chips, wear of the chrome plating)
– corrosion
Rod bending can be caused by several factors, namely:
– exceeding the rated load
– manufacturing defects or poor-quality metal
– poor-quality or deformed seals
– incorrect installation
Rod deformation leads to rapid seal wear.
Ways to repair the rod and barrel (hydraulic cylinder housing)
The hydraulics market often offers “local” fixes, namely re-chroming followed by polishing, metal surfacing with chrome plating, and honing the barrel. As hydraulic cylinder manufacturers, we strongly advise against such methods for small and medium-sized cylinders, and instead recommend full rod replacement together with comprehensive diagnostics to identify all the causes of the damage.
